Suicide prevention is everyone's business.
Creating hope through action is the theme of this year's 20th annual Suicide Prevention Day. Creating hope for continued life through taking action and advocating for policies and resources that work to ensure a reduction in suicide in our communities across Canada and the world.
Having lived experience, I know firsthand how important these policies are to ensure that people feel safe and comfortable accessing resources and making that connection. The importance of accessibility to resources when an individual may need them, no matter who or where they are, can never be understated.
Earlier this year I released my 2023 Calls of Action for Mental Health where I called on the Government of Canada and other applicable entities to work to urgently create a National Suicide Prevention Strategy as well as ensure the proper funding and accessibility needs of the National 988 Suicide and Crisis Line that is set for use later this year on November 30. While we have and continue to make great progress in reducing suicide and increasing awareness and resources, our work is not done and I continue to advise greater continued collaborative conversations. If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, you are not alone. There are resources and supports available. Reach out and make that connection with a family member, friend, or professional. A list of national and international crisis lines can be accessed by visiting ymhmcanada.ca/help.
