Statement on World Suicide Prevention Month 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 1 SEPTEMBER 2026

Suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month, with World Suicide Prevention Day observed on September 10. But the work of prevention, education, advocacy, and ensuring people can access meaningful support cannot be limited to one month or one day. It must continue throughout the year.

Seven years ago, I survived my first suicide attempt. That experience changed my life and continues to be a driving force behind my advocacy work today.

Over the years, I have seen important progress. Conversations around suicide and mental health are becoming more open. Prevention efforts and resources continue to grow. Policy changes are helping make it easier for people to connect with support when they need it most. These changes give me a growing sense of hope for what we can accomplish when we choose to listen, speak openly, and act together.

But hope must be matched with action. The work does not stop here.

Through the ongoing Hope Can’t Wait campaign, we are calling for stronger national leadership and a fully comprehensive National Suicide Prevention Strategy for Canada. One that prioritizes prevention and education, improves timely access to mental health and crisis supports, strengthens communities, and turns awareness into meaningful, sustained action.

No one should feel that they have to face a moment of crisis alone. We all have a role to play in creating a culture where people feel safe asking for help, where conversations about suicide are met with compassion rather than stigma, and where support is available when it is needed.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, I encourage Canadians to continue changing the narrative around suicide, challenging stigma, and moving the conversation forward.

Hope can’t wait. And neither should action.
